How does the recovery and storage of oil booms work?

The deployment of oil booms can be divided into two situations: long-term deployment and temporary deployment. There is no frequent recycling problem for long-term deployment. Generally, the temporary deployment of oil booms involves recovery, cleaning, maintenance, and storage. This section introduces the operation steps and precautions for the recovery, cleaning, maintenance and storage of oil booms.

1. Recovery operation of oil boom

The recovery of oil boom is the reverse operation of deployment. The recovery operation of the solid float oil boom is relatively simple, but the recovery speed is slow; the recovery operation of the inflatable oil boom is relatively easy. The main steps of the recovery operation are as follows:

1)The auxiliary tug boat first untie the tow rope of the oil boom, so that the oil boom is only connected to the main tug to tow;

2)According to the water area, the main tug should sail against the current, so that the oil boom is deployed in a straight line behind the stern of the ship

3)Use a winch or oil boom winding frame to slowly drag the oil boom onto the deck or wind it on the winding frame;

4)During the recovery process, the inflatable oil boom needs to release the gas in the air chamber while recovering, and save the air chamber cover;

5)Check whether the oil boom is damaged during the winding process and make a record.

2. Matters needing attention during the recycling process

1)Pay attention to safety during the recovery process of the oil boom. The oil boom will be very slippery, which increases the difficulty of the recovery operation, it will also stain the equipment and operators, and the deck will be slippery due to the oil. .

2)A person should be assigned to be responsible for on-site inspection of the oil boom that is being recovered, and records should be made, and the damaged ones should be repaired.

3)Appropriate amount of linoleum felt should be provided on the deck to clean up the dirty oil spilled on the deck in time.

4)If the oil stains brought by the recycling process will make the deck extremely slippery and cause safety hazards, the operation can be suspended, and the recycling operation can be continued after proper cleaning.

3. Cleaning the boom

Generally, oil booms that are repeatedly used for oil spill containment operations do not need to be cleaned. However, if the oil boom is used to protect non-oil-contaminated areas or transfer to shoreline cleaning operations and the used oil boom is left unused or needs to be stored in storage, it needs to be cleaned.

When cleaning the oil boom, it should be cleaned with a special cleaning device while recycling. If there is no special cleaning device, the oil boom can be recycled first, and then cleaned on the shore, but a cleaning area should be set up to avoid the overflow of cleaned sewage and secondary pollution.

To manually clean the oil fence, first use a scraper (preferably wood) to gently scrape off the thick oil layer that sticks to the surface of the oil fence, then wash it with warm water or use a dispersant brush, and finally wipe it off with an absorbent felt. In good weather conditions, 6 to 12 workers a day can clean the 305m oil boom.

Use the oil boom cleaning device, the cleaning angle between the spray gun and the oil boom surface should be less than 45°, and the water temperature used should not be overheated, as long as the surface oil can be removed, the lower the temperature, the better, to avoid causing the foreskin of the oil boom Premature aging.

The oil boom is finally rinsed with fresh water and placed in a cool place to dry before putting it in the inventory.

4. Storage and maintenance of oil boom

The storage and maintenance of the oil boom is directly related to the ability to quickly respond to oil spill emergency and effectively implement containment operations. In order to ensure rapid response, the storage location of the oil boom should be as close as possible to the docks, operating points and sensitive resource protection areas, and the storage location of the oil boom should be convenient for vehicles and ships to enter and exit. For oil booms stored outdoors, ensure that the storage place has good drainage and pay attention to insect pests, moisture, and avoid direct sunlight; when stored indoors, they should also be moisture-proof and well-ventilated, and take necessary measures in advance according to the situation. Take measures to prevent pests (such as spreading rodenticide, etc.); oil booms that need to be folded for storage should be placed on a shelf and no other items should be stacked on it, to avoid excessive pressure causing deformation of the oil fence, and stack them regularly The oil boom should be unfolded for inspection, and the original folding marks should be avoided when refolding; if the oil boom needs to be stored on the reel, the oil boom should be prevented from being twisted during the winding process, and the wound oil boom should be regularly Expand all, and recycle it after inspection. The maintenance of the oil boom mainly refers to the maintenance after daily maintenance and recycling operations. The maintenance after the recovery operation is mainly to check whether the oil boom is damaged, whether the accessories are complete or whether it needs to be replaced and repaired; daily maintenance generally checks whether the oil boom is worn out due to pulling and other loading and unloading reasons. Cracks, fiber aging, connector corrosion or damage, and carry out necessary maintenance and replacement; for oil booms that have been placed in waters for a long time, regular maintenance should also be carried out. Generally, the oil boom should be dragged ashore regularly according to specific conditions , Remove the marine organisms and other adherents attached to the surface of the oil boom; no matter what kind of maintenance and maintenance is carried out, it is necessary to make detailed records and arrange inspection and maintenance items according to the records to ensure that the oil is contained within a certain period of time. All the contents involved in the boom can be inspected and maintained at one time, so that the boom is always in a good standby state.
